Minnesota Milk Producers Association Executive Director Lucas Sjostrom says the Dairy Margin Coverage program been a great for Minnesota farmers. In 2019, the Minnesota Agriculture Department launched the DAIRI program to incentivize the state’s dairy farmers to sign up for the DMC program for five years. About 1,800 Minnesota dairy farmers are signed up. “We have the most signed up in the program for five years by far of any major dairy state. We’re 20 percentage points above Wisconsin. Our dairy farmers are locked in, but if farmers haven’t signed up, they’ll need to go see their local FSA office.” Sjostrom also says it’s important to get new farmers signed up for the program. “How do we pull sons and daughters that join the family farm into the current risk management programs? There’s no great way to do that right now.” The DMC sign-up deadline is Friday, December 11.
