Improving trade relationships can be tricky during COVID, but the U.S. wheat industry is adapting. That’s one takeaway from last week’s U.S. Wheat Associates meeting for Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers Executive Director Charlie Vogel. Vogel says in the short-term, already established relationships are being maintained virtually. “There is a significantly less financial barrier to doing a Zoom call compared to getting people on a plane and traveling. We’re able to reach a much broader audience than normal as well, but we can’t go as deep. The hope is as we exit COVID and march forward, this virtual stuff will still be used as a tool, but maybe as a first step. Then, some of those industry people would come to the U.S. and do a trade team visit.” Eventually, in-person visits will need to return. Vogel says wheat trade has been somewhat smooth during COVID.
