In the past six weeks, a large part of Argentina has only had 50 to 75 percent of normal rainfall. World Weather Incorporated Senior Agricultural Meteorologist Drew Lerner says the most important crop growing areas of Brazil are also dry. “They’ve been reporting 25 to 55 percent of the normal precipitation. It’s hard for Brazil to have an on-going drought, because their monsoon season is usually pretty healthy. It’s slow getting started this year. Nevertheless, there will be downward pressure on some of the production potential if this pattern prevails.” La Nina remains moderately strong. “The biases we’re seeing around the world associated with La Nina will continue and that means in the case of Brazil and Argentina, we’ll see ongoing below-average rainfall,” says Lerner. “We are going to be watching things closely and this is a year where we can’t spare too much grain and oilseed.”
