The sugarbeet industry is disappointed in the results in Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District. American Sugarbeet Growers Association Executive Vice President Luther Markwart said it’s not just Minnesota farmers hurt by the loss of House Agriculture Committee Collin Peterson. “Peterson’s influence and reach may not be appreciated by many people, but we have seen him work in Congress,” said Markwart. “His leadership experience amongst his colleagues has been fantastic. We’ve had a strong, bipartisan relationship.” Without Peterson involved in future farm bill discussions, Markwart feels the legislation could be more challenging to pass. “However, we are going to have a farm bill and we’ll work through it, but it will be harder than it was before the election.”
