The House Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation and Forestry held a hearing on the challenges and successes of conservation programs on Thursday. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson said enrollment in the Conservation Stewardship Program is challenging some Minnesota farmers. Natural Resources Conservation Service Acting Chief Kevin Norton responded by saying all of the programs are open to accept applications on a continuous basis, but there are evaluation cycles. If a farmer submits an application after the evaluation cycle, they’ll have to wait until the next time.” Essentially, Norton says it may be a factor of demand and resources.
