The COVID-19 pandemic will make this year’s sugarbeet harvest different from others. “It’s just a manner of altering normal harvest protocols to keep everyone socially distanced, masks in place and reduces tool and ticket transfer,” said Mike Metzger, vice-president of agriculture and research, Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative. “Everything works good in the shop and looks good on paper; there are very different approaches this year and everyone in the factory is safe.” Pre-pile harvest started on August 10. “Our bookends are probably the best crops, around Moorhead and Wheaton, Minnesota. In the middle, around Breckenridge to Fergus Falls and south, every cloud that came over seemed to get more moisture,” said Metzger. “That area is more behind than the others.” The full harvest campaign is on schedule to begin around October 1.
