Farmers with prevent plant ground near Hillsboro, North Dakota are trying to get cover crops seeded in-between rains. Lovas Crop Consulting owner Sarah Lovas says it’s not easy to work in the tacky field conditions. “I’m hoping we can get fields worked down soon. We’re getting to the point where if we can’t get anything planted on them soon to use the moisture, that field moisture could keep accumulating,” says Lovas. “I hope we wouldn’t have issues going forward into next year. Maybe I’m too early in saying that, but it would be nice to get a cover crop in to use moisture.” If farmers are considering multiple cover crop species, Lovas recommends farmers increase seeding rates. “More plant diversity means more plants using moisture and that can help.”
