Minnesota Pork Producers Association CEO David Preisler is pleading with Congress to include additional relief for the swine industry in the next coronavirus assistance package. The balance sheet is not looking good. “There’s been more equity loss and prices have been more depressed in pork production than any other commodity out there. This is shaping up to be the worst year financially that we literally have ever seen in pork production.” Preisler says there is still a backlog of hogs in the system. “The best case scenario that we’ve heard is trying to work through (the backlog) sometime in September.” If that that doesn’t happen, it will be more difficult to catch up with the increase in hog numbers late in the fourth quarter.
