Cattle producers continue to face market challenges. That’s why an ad hoc North Dakota Farmers Union livestock committee is proposing livestock industry reform measures. In a statement, NDFU President Mark Watne said, “When more than 80 percent of the beef packing industry is controlled by just four companies, producers are guaranteed a lower price for their cattle due to the lack of competition in the marketplace.” Specifically, Farmers Union is calling for fair markets, truth in labeling and increase local and regional slaughter capacity. Watne also stressed that with the immense challenges, “change needs to happen now.” Hear more in this Red River Farm Network interview with Watne.
