Hot, humid weather and spotty thunderstorms are pushing the risk for Fusarium Head Blight for wheat varieties susceptible to the disease. “In the southern Red River Valley, there’s lower risk, but the northern Red River Valley has a high risk,” said Jochum Wiersma, small grains agronomist, University of Minnesota Extension. “A lot of the crop started heading on July 4 weekend.” It’s important farmers apply fungicides at the right stage. “The optimum timing remains at the beginning of anthesis,” explained Wiersma. “More recent research done with the U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative says there’s some leeway if we’re on the later side with premium products like Miravis Ace and Prosaro fungicides; we have a little more leeway to get adequate control.”
