The combination of hot, humid weather and intermittent thunderstorms has pushed the risk for Fusarium Head Blight to very high for wheat varieties that are susceptible to very susceptible to the disease. The risk is even high for varieties that are rated moderately susceptible or moderately resistant to scab. According to a disease update from University of Minnesota Extension Agronomist Jochum Wiersma, the decision to apply fungicide to suppress fusarium “is not a question of ‘if,’ but ‘when’ going forward.” The only exception would be the pockets that are dealing with drought stress.
