With a 132-to-1 vote, the Minnesota House has approved the omnibus agriculture policy bill. This includes a $5 million appropriation for the soybean processing and research campus at Crookston. The bill creates a farm safety outreach program and there are grant funds available for farmers to purchase grain bin safety equipment. According to House Agriculture Committee Chair Jeanne Poppe, there is immunity language for veterinarians. “We want veterinarians if they are called in to see an animal that is not being properly cared for that they are immune from civil and criminal penalties by exposing that.” The ag bill includes the formation of a seed program advisory committee to advise the Minnesota Department of Agriculture on issues like noxious weed seeds. The bill now moves to the Senate.
