South Dakota Agriculture Secretary Kim Vanneman retired on Friday. In Vanneman’s near two years at the agriculture department, she’s most proud of her work with young farmers and ranchers and also, helping farmers build stronger relationships with consumers. “We need to really show consumers and the general public we are truly united in agriculture,” says Vanneman. “We are one team promoting agriculture as a whole.” Vanneman says there are opportunities as South Dakota farmers and ranchers navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I think there’s a place for direct and niche marketing along with bigger packers. We need to let some of that flourish and blossom. It’s important to have a place for everybody.” Vanneman will be returning to the family farm, located north of Winner, South Dakota. Lieutenant Governor Larry Rhoden will be serving as the Interim Secretary of Agriculture moving forward. Hear an interview with Vanneman.
