The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service announced $5 million in grants available for wetland mitigation banks. Wetland mitigation banks restore, create or enhance wetlands to compensate for unavoidable impacts to wetlands at another location. Farmers can buy credits from banks to maintain eligibility for farm programs. The grants could be an opportunity for North Dakota agriculture. “We think we can get this funding up into North Dakota and get this wetland mitigation banking going,” said Dan Wogsland, executive director, North Dakota Grain Growers Association. “It’s desperately needed. If we’re going to have orderly water management in the state, having wetland credits available is a key component.” Read more about the grant program.
