Farmers in southern Minnesota made quite a bit planting progress during the final week of April. “I think many areas growing corn are done with planting and they’ve moved immediately to soybeans,” says Dave Nicolai, crops educator, University of Minnesota Extension. “A large majority of the soybeans were planted and their planting will be done likely 20 days ahead of last year.” Nicolai says soil conditions are somewhat dry. “A rain would be very welcome for germination and for farmers who want to apply a pre-emergence herbicide. We really need a quarter or half an inch of rain for good activation of that product.”
