Pork producers across the region are trying to get through the supply chain challenges. Pipestone, Minnesota farmer and National Pork Producers Council board member Terry Wolters raises hogs from farrow to weaning. Wolters continues to send pigs to be finished, but barn space is tighter than usual. “It’s common to have 2,500 head barns. They’re putting market hogs on one half of the building and take wean pigs on the other side. You can double up pigs if needed.” There are some tough decisions being made in the farrowing unit. “The sows that were bred 10 months ago are the market hogs going to market today. That impact isn’t an easy situation to change. With that, we have to make select culling and euthanasia decisions and potentially consider boarding sows to stop the flow of pigs.” This could also have an impact on next year’s hog production.
