While it’s still too wet to begin planting right now, American Crystal Sugar Company General Agronomist Joe Hastings says a couple of warm, dry weeks will help. “We’ve got some good weather in the forecast. It’s been a long winter and we’ll need patience,” he says. “There’s some wet soils out there, but fortunately, about 75 percent of sugarbeet acres are planted on wheat ground.” Patience and shallow passes will be critical. “Ruts make things tough. How do you smooth them out without going too deep or too aggressive with tillage? Farmers want a nice three inch tillage depth for sugarbeets.”
