The USDA approved $285 million in disaster aid for sugar cooperatives across the country due to production challenges in 2018 and 2019. So far, six sugar cooperatives received funds. Red River Valley-based American Crystal Sugar Company received the most funds for harvest losses at $82.3 million, followed by the Western Sugar Cooperative at $69.1 million. Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative received $52.8 million for 2018 and 2019 losses and Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative received $46.3 million for 2018 and 2019 losses. Michigan Sugar Company received $27.9 million and the Wyoming Sugar Company received $3.1 million. USDA said they are still working on an agreement with the Amalgamated Sugar Company.
