Last week, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz issued an emergency executive order to provide an Hours of Service and weight restriction relief for commercial vehicle drivers hauling livestock. According to Minnesota Soybean Growers Association Executive Director Joe Smentek, it’s important for all agriculture to maintain a supply of essential products going into spring. “The fall weather impacted people’s ability to put down fertilizer in the fall. We expect a lot of that to happen in the spring. We need to keep the supply volumes up to make sure people have what they need.” Smentek said the Walz administration and state lawmakers are also working on addressing concerns surrounding roads and bridges. “Getting roads and bridges back up to par is definitely a bonding bill issue. I think there is a lot of support on both sides of the aisle for a bonding bill. I think they’ll try to use it as a stimulus package in getting some more roads and projects done through bonding. That’s if they come back to session.”
