In St. Paul, state lawmakers are looking at ways to mitigate the challenges of the coronavirus. Minnesota House Agriculture and Food Finance and Policy Division Chair Jeanne Poppe explains there’s a few things being considered to help local food production. “One is a pesticide issue. People need a license right now if they use bleach in something as they’re dealing with remedies on things,” says Poppe. “One issue might be not requiring them to be licensed on that at this time. We obviously need people to be disinfecting across the state. Relief on that will be one thing.” Poppe says lawmakers are also looking at the recently approved Rural Finance Authority funds. “There could be language changes in the policy bill we would have been addressing and moving this up to a more priority basis. If farmers can have greater access during this pandemic, that’s important.” The first policy deadline was scheduled for last Friday, but the deadline is being adjusted.
