Seed potato shipping season begins this week. Karlstad, Minnesota farmer Justin Dagen says the various customers in Wisconsin and southern Minnesota have lost some snow and are looking forward to getting seed potato supplies. Russet potatoes, round white potatoes and fresh red seed potatoes are in demand. Dagen says there will likely be shortages with some seed varieties. “That causes commercial potato growers to drive further to source seed. In terms of sourcing it in the Red River Valley, they may have to go to other growing areas that didn’t experience the difficult harvest conditions we did. On our farm, we harvest potatoes on land that’s tiled and irrigated to make it dependable source for the next year.”
