The cattle industry is responding to market disruptions as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, other USDA officials and members of Congress, the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association says producers bottom lines are suffering. USCA Director of Policy and Outreach Lia Biondo says one ask from cattlemen is for programs to provide financial support. “We’re asking the Secretary Perdue to use authority under the Commodity Credit Corporation to implement programs to assist producers, like something similar to the Market Facilitation Program or the Livestock Indemnity Program.” Other asks from the association include continuation of federal meat inspections and monitoring of anti-competitive buying practices.
