The mission of the Red River Watershed Management Board is to coordinate and finance flood damage reduction projects. Wild Rice Watershed District Administrator Kevin Ruud says one goal is to protect on-farm infrastructure from recurring floods. “One of the things we’ve done for a lot of farmers in the area is ring dikes around their farm sites.” The WRWD is also working on a long-term project to restore 23 miles of river and putting it back to a permanent vegetative state. That was lost in the 1950s when the Corps of Engineers did a straightening project.
