Fresh red and Russet potato prices are stronger this year. Part of that is due to the wet fall’s impact on supply. United Potato Growers of America President Mark Klompien says fair returns are expected again. “Weekly shipments are still well under the three-year average. That’s very positive news for the red and Russet markets. Going into the next year, the challenge is how many acres to plant. The Red River Valley has seen a decline in red acres in exchange for yellow potato acres. The yellow potato production wasn’t down on a percentage basis as much as red potatoes. That trend will likely continue.” Klompien was part of the potato program during the International Crop Expo.
