Sugarbeets with tolerance to three popular herbicides could be on the market by the middle of this decade. Betaseed Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mark Schmidt says this will be the first trait of its kind in sugarbeets. “Our parent company, KWS, is developing a new multi- herbicide tolerant trait that is tolerant to glyphosate, dicamba and glufoxinate. We just recently announced it was moving from the research phase to the regulatory phase.” Schmidt says this will provide more flexibility for weed management in beets. “It will give growers a greater opportunity to combat developing populations of glyphosate resistant weeds and give them some flexibility to have a weed management strategy for the whole farm and not just for sugarbeets.”
