The current market environment is presenting both challenges and opportunities for farmers. Iowa State University agricultural economist Chad Hart says the challenges with corn and soybeans started in the spring. The crops were planted late, matured late and even some remains in fields. “I think there will be opportunities coming up this spring,” says Hart. “The problem this crop has is quality, and quality usually rears its ugly head in the springtime when usage increases.” USDA will release their final production numbers in January 2020. However, Hart says it may take many months to determine the size of the 2019 crop. “I think we’ll be wrestling with how much usable crop there is this entire marketing year. Even next fall we’ll still be arguing about how much crop was lost.” Hart was joined by NDSU Extension’s Frayne Olson and Martinson Ag Risk Management’s Randy Martinson in the conversation at the Northern Ag Expo in Fargo.
