Corn harvest progress is slow in northeastern South Dakota, as moisture content remains high and field conditions are poor. Despite the challenges, Houghton, South Dakota farmer Troy Knecht says yields are surprising. “I’d say it’s a little bit above average. Moisture is anywhere from 22 to 25 percent,” says Knecht. “With the recent warm up, field conditions have got pretty tough. Some guys are even waiting for it to freeze up again.” The high moisture corn is causing some logistical problems. Both farmers and elevators are working to get grain through the dryer. “The dryer systems are full. Some of the local elevators will run (the dryer) in the morning and only take dry corn in the afternoon,” says Knecht. “Some farmers are considering piling corn on the ground or filling bins with wet corn and drying it later.” Hear more from Knecht.
