The Minnesota Senate Agriculture, Rural Development and Housing Finance Committee held a field hearing in Crookston Friday morning. Chairman Torrey Westrom says it was a chance to hear firsthand what farmers are facing in northwestern Minnesota. “We’re hearing about harvest challenges, soft grain prices and other financial burdens,” says Westrom. “The best way to find out the realities and hear these stories is by visiting rural Minnesota.” There is policy the state can implement to ease the burden. “There was an increase in funding for mental health programs last year. We can also help with property taxes and other regulations.” Westrom adds at times there is one-time aid the state can implement, but that is a rarity.
