During his visit to the Red River Valley, USDA Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation Bill Northey heard from farmers dealing with an unprecedented harvest season. Northey said crop insurance is especially challenged in a year like this when quality problems are seen in addition to production issues. “Each crop is a little different and there are pieces here that we need to consider how the problem carries on,” said Northey. “The production from each year goes into a formula and what you guarantee in future years. This has an impact on crop insurance guarantees for the next ten years.” The short-term and long-term impact of these issues will be considered. Northey joined Senator John Hoeven, Senator Kevin Cramer and Governor Doug Burgum for a meeting in Argusville and Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson for a meeting in Moorhead.
