At Leeds, North Dakota, rancher Erika Kenner continues to dig out from the storm that left over two feet of snow in places. The recent snow and rain have been a change in pace for Kenner Simmental Ranch. “We were in a D2 drought most of the summer,” says Kenner. In preparation for the storm, Kenner moved as many cattle as possible closer to home. Over 400 cows remained out on pasture because the corn and soybean crops had not been harvested. “So, we opened up a wildlife area where we planted a bunch of evergreens and they stayed there.” Even though the storm has come and gone, the challenges don’t stop. “Not only are we dealing with financial losses, but there is a lot of stress. I hope we all can have a good support system within each other and our communities to get through this.”
