During the town hall meeting at World Dairy Expo, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue was asked about the merits of supply management. “We see our neighbors to the north doing that and while some have suggested that, I don’t think that’s what we know about America and American productivity,” Perdue later told reporters. “We’ve tried farm programs in the past to do that with set-aside programs and dairy buyouts. The industry has to control its supply and demand.” Perdue also praised the new farm bill and the Dairy Margin Coverage program. “There’s no doubt there’s been economic stress in the dairy industry, but we believe better days are ahead.”
