Silage harvest in Minnesota is progressing behind the average pace. Based at Murdock, Minnesota, CY Harvesting co-owner Nathan Collins says it’s been a struggle since day one. “There is just a lot of rain and mud. Unfortunately, the weather will determine when we have to stop,” says Collins. “Based on planting date, we’re seeing a wider range of tonnage this year. We’re not going to hit the tonnage needs on our farm.” Typically, corn for silage is chopped when moisture is between 55 to 70 percent. Collins says trying to get the optimal moisture and quality is a challenge this year. “The search for other alternatives started on day one of harvest. It’s getting dry and time to be done.” This Harvest Hotline update is made possible by AgCountry Farm Credit Services, the North Dakota Mill and U.S. Custom Harvesters, Incorporated.
