Brazil is raising its quota on U.S. ethanol imports under the tariff rate quote to nearly 750 million liters per year. The U.S. ethanol industry isn’t pleased with the increase, saying the trade barrier needed to be completely removed between the two countries. Renewable Fuels Association President Geoff Cooper says this is an unfair and unlevel playing field and it may be time for the U.S. to reconsider the open-door trade policy on sugarcane ethanol. U.S. Grains Council president and CEO Ryan LeGrand says this decision has a negative impact on Brazilian consumers by raising prices at the pump.
