According to a new report from CoBank, historic planting delays will increase market volatility for grain elevators and other end-users. CoBank economist Tanner Ehmke cites the basis levels in central Ohio, where the market rallied 25 cents from May-through-June to the highest point in five years. By mid-August, that Ohio basis dropped nearly 50 cents. The report says elevators could experience extreme profits or losses for new crop corn. In some areas, it may be difficult to source an adequate supply of corn.
