There were several storm systems that hit across the region this past week. One went through the Hazen, North Dakota area. Dean Knell farms near Hazen and says it was hit or miss. His farmland wasn’t impacted, but east of town, there were reports of hail damage. Based in Bismarck, National Weather Service meteorologist Adam Jones says the path of the storm was pretty damaging. “We had hail about two inches in diameter near Hazen. There was also golf ball size hail and 70 miles per hour winds on the southeast side of Bismarck. That storm moved southeast and crossed into South Dakota, producing damaging winds and large hail.” Near Onida, South Dakota Chuck Todd says his sunflowers and winter wheat were totaled out by the hail and wind. “It touched lots of growers in western Sully county and Hughes county.” Further north, East Grand Forks, Minnesota grower Matt Krueger’s soybeans were hit with hail in a different system. “I don’t think the soybeans will make it. There was neighbor’s corn that was pollinating and got really shredded,” says Krueger. “There’s also wheat that got some damage. It took a good ding to the crop.”
