The fields are damp near Gettysburg, South Dakota. Sugden Harvesting owner Rick Sugden is eager to start harvesting winter wheat. “We’ve had lots of fog, humidity and sprinkles of rain keeping us from the fields.” Sugden says the winter wheat is yielding average. “Yield is in the 50s to 80s, but farmers are happy with yields. Test weight and quality have been good, but protein is low.” Sugden says if the fall crops don’t get hit with an early frost, it will continue to be a late harvest for the area.
