The Wheat Quality Council’s Hard Spring Wheat and Durum Tour is happening in North Dakota this week. The group will be taking a closer look at the crop and make a yield estimate. Small grains grower Dennis Haugen is a driver. He will be driving through his home area of Hannaford, also the Pingree and Tuttle areas of North Dakota on the tour. Haugen says small grains started out rough. “Now things are bouncing back. What’s drowned out is gone,” he says. “We all know that, but the balance of that, if we can keep disease out, we hope to have a decent crop.” Industry and government representatives are on the tour. Some attendees traveled a long way. Maria Velarde works for a flour mill in Chile. “We do produce flour for big companies. We need high quality flour. I look forward to learning how the wheat is produced in the U.S.”
