The change to haying and grazing prevent plant acres by USDA is welcome, but South Dakota Senator John Thune is open to looking at options to make the program more user-friendly for farmers in the Northern Plains. “There are years where we have pockets of more localized problems like this. We talked about coming out with a legislative solution that would put into law some flexibility to deal with those types of situations on a more geographically limited basis. Hopefully we won’t have this problem again next year, but if we do we’ll we’ll be prepared to respond accordingly.” Thune met with USDA leaders last week to discuss possible options.
