USDA’s announcement on haying and grazing is a short-term solution for farmers and ranchers. One longer-term solution for farmers and ranchers moving forward could be the Feed Emergency Enhancement During Disasters (FEEDD) Act. South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson, one sponsor of the bill, couldn’t confirm next steps for the legislation. “It’s going to be much harder to get committee hearing time and it’s going to be harder to get floor time for a bill that doesn’t address a clear and present danger,” says Johnson. “The prospects of passage has gone down, but our goal wasn’t to pass a bill. It was to provide relief to livestock producers. We got that.”
