American Crystal Sugar Company and NDSU Extension are alerting sugarbeet growers in the central and northern Red River Valley peak sugarbeet root maggot fly activity is expected June 18. NDSU Extension Entomologist Mark Boetel says the southern Red River Valley is already at peak activity. “It’s an unusual year where degree day accumulations are similar between Ada and north, toward St. Thomas. There are lots of hot spots.” Sticky traps are catching an unusually high number of flies. “A high percentage of our sticky monitoring locations are at severe levels. Anything over 100 is a concern. We’re nearing 800 for the season in a few sites.”
