Senate Agriculture Committee members pressed USDA Chief Economist Rob Johansson for more details on the 2019 Market Facilitation Program in a hearing Thursday. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar asked if USDA is considering regional shipping disparities within each commodity. North Dakota Senator John Hoeven followed up with a similar question. “I think that (basis) will be a key piece of information Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue will consider as we move forward with implementation of MFP,” responded Johansson. “There are other key considerations as well. Some of that includes progress we do make with China on reaching a deal moving forward. We’ve looked at basis and we’re going to continue to follow it.” Johansson said the details of the new MFP are being reviewed at the Office of Management and Budget. It could take a few weeks to get through that process.
