The Minnesota House jobs bill includes $10 million for a transfer from the Department of Economic Development to the Department of Agriculture to help small dairy farmers buy into the federal Dairy Margin Coverage program. House Agriculture Committee Chair Jeanne Poppe says this has become a critical issue. “Farmers are drowning because of the inability to make money in this industry and we really believe we need to do something for our dairy farmers.” Poppe says Minnesota has been losing an average of one dairy farm per day during this current downturn in the market.
