Farmers could be dealing with wet soils this spring planting season. South Dakota State University Extension agronomy field specialist Sara Bauder recommends letting fields dry as much as possible to ensure a proper seed bed. In the meantime, there are ways to prepare. Planters should be set properly to avoid side wall compaction when working in less than ideal conditions. “Sharp disk openers help, as well as adjusting the downforce on your planter,” says Bauder. “You should also look at hitch height, seed firming at the bottom of the trench and getting furrows closed.
