According to the National Ground Water Association, thousands of rural water wells in flooded areas of the Midwest could be contaminated. While the exact number of wells potentially affected cannot be readily counted, Census Bureau data shows over one million wells in 300 counties impacted by flooding. This estimate covers ten states, including Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The association says well owners should continue to monitor and test their systems. Disinfection, wellhead repair and relocation may be needed.
