This past week, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer met to discuss removal of U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs. Both Canada and Mexico are threatening to withhold ratification of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement if the tariffs remain in place. Specifically, Freeland wants the Trump Administration to lift the tariffs without replacing them with a quota. A trade official from Mexico echoed those comments, saying elimination of the tariffs are needed.
