Overall, the U.S. cattle industry is pleased with the decision for USDA to oversee lab-grown meat. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall says the labeling part is important. “We don’t want to find ourselves in a situation like our friends in the milk industry, where almond milk is showing up on the store shelf,” says Woodall. “We had to get ahead of this so the term clean meat doesn’t end up on the packages of the product. USDA isn’t going to allow that on the package. The approval process is going to be a lot more rigorous.” The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association is also pleased with the language in the formal agreement and wants a new stamp made for cell-cultured products.
