The National Milk Producers Federation has filed a citizen petition with the Food and Drug Administration, outlining a road map to resolve the dispute over the labeling of non-dairy products. NMPF executive vice president Tom Balmer said the dairy industry wants the FDA to enforce the rules that are already on the books. “For non-dairy foods that substitute and resemble standardized dairy foods, but are nutritionally inferior to the dairy foods they reference, we are urging immediate enforcement of the existing imitation labeling regulations.” Plant-based beverages, like so-called soy milk or almond milk, are the target of this effort. The FDA public comment period on the labeling issue just ended. More than 13,000 comments were submitted. “Our approach does not advocate for any so-called ban; it simply relies on proper disclosures that allow for appropriate, truthful, non-misleading messaging.”
