Earlier this year, North Dakota agriculture groups filed comments on USDA’s interim final rule on wetlands. Attorney Kale Van Bruggen says the NRCS was really trying to say they want to make existing policies more permanent. He is unclear on the next steps following the comments, but he did take time to briefly discuss the interim rule and answer other farmer questions during the Northern Corn and Soybean Expo. “When there’s not clarity or certainty in this process, that makes people stop and think, are the benefits I’m getting worth staying in compliance? Would it be better for my bottom line to not be tied to these hazy regulations?” asks Van Bruggen. “I think that’s a challenge.”
