To better identify harmful weeds, NDSU Extension says there’s one good rule of thumb; long hair, don’t care. This means if the weed doesn’t have hair, it’s likely waterhemp or Palmer amaranth. Weed specialist Joe Ikley says farmers need to control Palmer if they have it, because it is on North Dakota’s noxious weed list. “Farmers can hand weed fields,” explains Ikley. “The absolute worst case would be if we have to mow down a field if there’s a major population. We hope to not get to the point. We want to stay ahead of this.”
