The Food Safety Modernization Act requires that certain grain and feed facilities have a written food safety plan and hazard analysis. The documents must be prepared by a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual or PCQI. To meet requirements, Northern Crops Institute will be holding a Preventive Controls for Animal Food course Tuesday through Thursday. “Even if you don’t find any hazards at the facility, a plan must still be written with all considerations,” explains Kim Koch, NCI feed production center manager. “Also, the food safety plan must cover the particular hazards that the facility is protected from.” The animal food rule applies to facilities required to register with the Food and Drug Administration as a food facility. Exemptions do apply, and a list can be found at fda.gov.
